Why Do Most Entrepreneurs Burn Out in 5 Years?

To be a truly great entrepreneur, you have to have enthusiasm, passion, drive, and discipline.

Many entrepreneurs can check off enthusiasm and passion pretty easily. These are the “fun things” about owning your own business; if you’ve made a living out of it, it’s likely going to be something that you love.

But over time, the “fun things” wear off. Your once exhilarating career begins to level out and feels eerily similar to the way your corporate job once did: monotonous, overwhelming, and unsatisfying. You’ve fallen into a routine.

Most entrepreneurs burn out around this time because they think they’ve hit a ceiling and have fallen out of love with their work. It scares people—and rightfully so! It can be disheartening to think that something you once loved is no longer near and dear to your heart.

But the truth is that this point in your journey is a defining moment. It’s the moment where drive and discipline must take over. To be a truly great entrepreneur, you have to think outside the box and learn to discover new ways to fall in love with your career once again.

Ways to Reignite Your Passion for Your Work

  1. Teach others about what you do.
There may not be a better way to fall back in love with your career than to teach others. By doing so, you’ll get to talk about what it is you love so much about your work. Seeing passion in others will certainly remind you why you started this path in the first place.
  2. Take a course and find a mentor.
If things feel stale, get out of your routine by taking course with a mentor who has the success that you want. If it’s a course related to what you do, you can gain more expertise and, in turn, credibility in your field. At the very least, it will reawaken your sense of creativity.
  3. Network.
Talk to other entrepreneurs! You’re certainly not the first to experience burnout. Simply talk through what you’re dealing with and share with others who have experienced similar situations. You’re not alone.

The excitement of entrepreneurship will inevitably fade at some point. When it does, simply ask yourself how you can continue to invest in yourself and grow your passion.
